Landed cost estimator: from machine price to project number
The machine is typically only 35–55% of a production-line project. This estimator turns an ex-works China equipment price into the number you should actually budget — freight, duty, VAT, clearing, civils, installation, commissioning and training included. All figures USD, indicative, August 2026.
1 · Your inputs
Freight defaults: US$2,700 per 20ft, US$3,150 per 40ft (China → Durban, Aug 2026 midpoints; peak season Aug–Nov runs 15–30% higher). Override below if you have a quote.
Most production machinery under HS Chapter 84 enters South Africa at 0% duty; some packaging, refrigeration and motor sub-headings carry 5–15% — check your tariff heading. Clearing/inland default is a placeholder — replace with your agent's quote.

Indicative planning figures, August 2026 — not a quote. Raw-material working capital is excluded and on several line types rivals the machine cheque. For a written number on your actual line: talk to an engineer.
Sense check: a healthy project usually shows equipment at 35–55% of the installed total. If your estimate shows 80%+, blocks are missing — not costs saved.
How these numbers work
August 2026 China→Durban market midpoints: 20ft containers typically US$2,100–3,300 and 40ft US$2,500–3,800, cross-checked across multiple freight indices and forwarder guides. Rates move — peak season (Aug–Nov) runs 15–30% higher and quotes are usually valid about two weeks — so paste in your live quote for a real project. Background: what shipping a container from China really costs.
Most production, processing and packaging machinery under HS Chapter 84 enters South Africa duty-free; certain packaging, refrigeration and motor sub-headings carry 5–15%. The rate rides on your 8-digit tariff code, so confirm the heading before you budget.
Import VAT of 15% is levied on the customs value plus duty. For a VAT-registered manufacturer it's reclaimable against output tax, which is why we show it separately: it's a cash-flow item, not a project cost — but you do need the cash to bridge it.
Raw-material working capital (grain, preforms, cement — often the biggest cheque after the machines), financing costs, land or building purchase, and product certification. The full picture is in what it costs to set up a small factory.
