Why the USD 15,000 machine isn't a feed mill
Online listings for "feed pellet machines" at USD 10,000–50,000 aren't dishonest — they're just answering a smaller question. A pellet mill on its own can densify whatever you feed it. A feed business needs the rest: grinding to a consistent particle size, accurate batch mixing so the formulation on the bag is the formulation in the bag, steam conditioning that decides pellet durability, cooling so pellets don't crumble in the bakkie, and the commissioning that proves tonnes-per-hour on your formulation, not the brochure's. That's the difference between the machine advert and the USD 60,000–150,000 small-line band — and skipping it is how farms end up with expensive scrap and cheap powder.
What the price leaves out — and what dwarfs it
- Raw material working capital. Maize and soya dominate feed cost. A 3 t/h plant running one shift consumes roughly 500+ tonnes of raw material a month — that cheque, month after month, is the real capital question. On several projects we've priced, the first season's raw material exceeded the plant itself.
- Formulation discipline. A nutritionist-backed formulation and basic lab checks are operating costs; without them the pellets are just shapes.
- Intake and storage — silos or a managed bag store; feed plants live or die on intake logistics.
- Freight, clearing and installation for imported scope — see the landed cost estimator; duty on most feed machinery under HS Chapter 84 is 0% (check your heading).
- Power — pelleting is energy-hungry; the connection must carry the mill's peak, not its average.
Honest local note: South Africa has capable local fabricators for hammer mills and simple mixers, and for a farm-scale mash plant a local build is often the right answer — we'll say so. The imported-line case starts where pellet quality, conditioning and formulation control become commercial requirements: broiler contracts, retail feed brands, consistent durability specs.
Which scale should you price?
- Whose animals eat this feed? Your own herd caps the tonnage honestly; selling feed commercially demands the consistency the mid tier is built for.
- What's your secured off-take at 70–80% utilisation?
- Can you fund the raw material — not once, but every month?
- Poultry, ruminant, or both? Formula changeovers shape the mixing and storage spec more than the pellet mill does.
