Water treatment is the plant, not an accessory
The filler gets the attention; the treatment train earns the licence. Whether you draw from a borehole or a municipal supply, bottled water in South Africa is a regulated foodstuff, and your treatment configuration — filtration, reverse osmosis where the source needs it, UV and ozone — has to be designed for your source water and proven with laboratory results, batch after batch. What the machine price leaves out
- Freight, clearing and installation — the 25–45% on top of ex-works. See import duties on production equipment in South Africa for how the tariff treatment works.
- The bottle question — blow your own bottles from preforms (a blow moulder and moulds in the budget) or buy finished bottles (simpler, dearer per unit, and a supply dependency). - Utilities — clean compressed air is the quiet cost driver of a PET hall; add water storage and a power connection sized for the peak, not the average.
- A food-grade hall — washable surfaces, drainage, pest control, and the flow separation an auditor expects.
- Compliance and lab work — certification and routine microbiological testing are operating costs the brochure never mentions.
- Commissioning and training — the difference between rated speed in month one and month twelve.
The question that protects you: not "what does the bottling machine cost?" but "what does a commissioned plant cost, on my source water, making my bottle?" Our South African bottling line case study shows that arithmetic on a real project.
The business you're actually entering
Once the line runs, your cost per bottle is dominated by preforms, closures, labels and film — not by machine depreciation. That is why volume discipline matters more than machine ambition: an entry line running flat out against secured distribution beats a mid-speed plant at 30% utilisation every month of the year. Size the line to the distribution you can actually reach, and let the upgrade be a nice problem for year three.
